Alberto Pasini worked for several months in Théodore Chassériau's studio, who transmitted his passion for the Orient to him through his travel accounts. In 1855, Pasini travelled to Egypt, Saudi Arabia, South Yemen and the Persian Gulf, finally arriving in Teheran, where he spent a year and a half. This trip marked the beginning of a career almost exclusively devoted to Orientalist painting. Pasini’s carefully observed, naturalistic street views, and his reputation as both a fine draughtsman and meticulous colourist are evident in the present work.
