Description
A Dutch silver windmill cup, unknown maker's mark, Zierikzee, 1724-1732
the bell-shaped cup engraved with three scrolling foliate cartouches, two enclosing sailboats, the third with Venus holding a ribbon, all above a Dutch rhyme, the detachable upper section in two parts, the first of drum-shape engraved with slanted reeding, the second in the form of a windmill with a similar engraving, clock dial and revolving sails, fitted with a pipe and a ladder mounted with two millers carrying sacks on their heads, a third emerging through a doorway, the rim of the cup and the pipe both engraved 'FROM THE SALE OF H.R.H., THE DUKE OF SUSSEX'S EFFECTS, 1843', the rhyme reads:'Wanneer 't Fortuin U Dient Sal U geen Vriend Onbreeken, Maaralst Fortuin Ukeerdt Dan Is U Vriend Geweeken' (When fortune serves you well not a friend will be lacking, but when your fortune turns, your friend will disappear)

Coupe en forme de moulin à vent en argent, Zierikzee, 1724-1732
la coupe en forme de cloche gravée de trois cartouches feuillagés, deux entourant des voiliers, le troisième avec Vénus tenant un ruban, le tout au-dessus d'une inscription hollandaise, la partie supérieure amovible détachable en deux pièces, la première en forme de tambour gravée d'un filet oblique, la seconde en forme de moulin à vent avec une gravure similaire, un cadran d'horloge et des ailes tournantes, équipée d'une pipe et d'une échelle montée avec deux meuniers portant des sacs sur la tête, un troisième émergeant à travers une porte, le bord de la tasse et la pipe étant tous deux gravés "FROM THE SALE OF H. R.H., THE DUKE OF SUSSEX'S EFFECTS, 1843', l'inscription se lit : 'Wanneer 't Fortuin U Dient Sal U geen Vriend Onbreeken, Maaralst Fortuin Ukeerdt Dan Is U Vriend Geweeken' (Lorsque la fortune vous sert bien, aucun ami ne vous manquera, mais lorsque votre fortune tournera, votre ami disparaîtra)
