Description
A Dutch silver and mother-of-pearl toilet box, Barend van Meckelenburg, Amsterdam, 1786
of cylindrical form, on gadrooned spreading foot, with gilt interior, the detachable cover with gadrooned border and set with a shell-shaped, mother-of-pearl plaque surmounted with acanthus leaves, the shell carved in low and high relief with six music-making and marching infant bacchantes, one riding a goat with laurel wreath preceded by one holding a laurel wreath, the ground scattered with flowers and grass, marked: Maker's mark: Barend van Meckelenburg (1751 Leer? - Amsterdam 1823), Amsterdam, 1779-1823, BVM in rounded shield, VM conjoined Town mark: Amsterdam, 1772-1795, three crosses in a shield below a stylised crown Year mark: Amsterdam, 1786, B in a circle Hallmark: Holland, 1752-1795, a lion rampant to left in a shield below a crown

de forme ronde, sur piedouche godronné, l'intérieur doré, le couvercle amovible à bordure godronnée et serti d'une plaque de nacre en forme de coquille surmontée de feuilles d'acanthe, la coquille sculptée en bas et haut-relief de six bacchantes musiciennes en marche, l'une chevauchant une chèvre avec couronne de laurier précédée d'une autre tenant une couronne de laurier, le sol parsemé de fleurs et d'herbes
