L.G.G. Ramsey. F.S.A, Montague Dawson R.S.M.A., F.R.S.A., Leigh-on-Sea1970, cat. 242, plate 45, illustrated, as Sovereign of the Rolling Sea.

Wrongly identified previously as The USS Constitution but comparison with other firmly identified works of that vessel reveal that the present picture has five, not four, sails on the most prominent mast, and lacks the flags at rear and top. For comparison, see Ron Ranson, The Maritime Paintings of Montague Dawson (1993), p. 37, ill. for The USS Constitution
Dawson's portrait of Sovereign of the Rolling Seas shows the vessel barreling ahead at full speed, sails unfurled and billowing in the wind.
