Condition report

The following condition report has been provided by Karen Thomas of Pietro Edwards Society of Art Conservation, 336 West 37th Street, Suite 1580, New York, NY 10018, 212-457-8956, mh@edwards-society.com, an independent restorer who is not an employee of Sotheby's.

This picture is in excellent condition overall, with beautifully intact paint layers and no significant losses. Local areas of blind tenting paint are concentrated in a vertical stretch down the center of the painting, presumably corresponding to a join in the vertically grained wood panel. Minimal retouching along this join addresses tiny losses and some cracks in the paint. Retouching also knits together areas in the darkest shadows where normal, age-related increased transparency of the paint has developed. The varnish is clear and free of discoloration although the gloss is uneven, with scattered matte areas visible in raking light. The wood panel displays a very mild lateral warp.

The lifting paint should be set back in plane to prevent losses from developing, and a varnish revival carried out to even the gloss level. After treatment, the painting should be returned to its climate enclosure framing to protect the painting from environmental changes that could cause the lifting to re-appear.
