These bronzes are inspired by the monumental Paschal Candlestick made by Andrea Riccio circa 1507-1516 for the Basilica di Sant’Antonio in Padua (H. 392 cm), with four winged sphinxes, one at each corner. This astonishing work, pyramidal in shape and decorated with many reliefs and mythological figures, is certainly one of Riccio’s masterpieces.
The Victoria & Albert Museum has a pair of free-standing Sphinxes, described as dating to 1530-1550, which are based on the same model as the present examples (H. 48.5 cm, inv. no A.89-1910 and A.90-1989).
