The crest (a demi lion rampant holding a sword below the motto 'DEUS JUVAT' and earl's coronet) is that of Duff, for William Duff, 1st Earl Fife (1697-1763), a Scottish landowner and politician, who was M.P. for Banffshire from 1727 to 1734. He was elevated to the peerage in 1735.

The arms (barry of six, azure and argent, in chief three annulets gules, below a baron's coronet, wyvern supporters, motto: 'EXCITARI NON HEBESCERE') are those of De Grey for William de Grey, 1st Baron Walsingham (1719-1781), lawyer, judge and politician, who was the third son of Thomas de Grey, M.P. for Merton, Norfolk, and his wife, Elizabeth (née Windham). He was M.P. for Newport from 1761 to 1770 and for Cambridge University in 1770/1771. He was knighted on 28 January 1771 and elevated to the peerage as Baron Walsingham on 17 October 1780.
