painted with a stylized Chinoiserie male figure seated beside a table and under a tree, with a winged insect in flight to his side, and leafy sprigs around the brown edged-rim

Overall the plate is in good appearance and generally good condition. One corner with a pin-prick flat chip. Typical pale kiln speckling to areas of reverse and top right edge of front. Some typical minor surface scratching to enamels.

Two octagonal plates painted in this rare design were in the Frank Tilley Collection, sold at Sotheby's London, November 24, 1938, lots 72, and subsequently sold in the same rooms, January 28, 1964, lot 223. One of the plates was later sold at Sotheby's London, April 3, 1973, lot 157.
