The dynamic rays conveying rhythm and movement that characterise the present work are typical of the artist's inimitable style. Long associated with Wanda Monastyrska, the art historian Elena Kashuba has suggested that this rare pastel is in fact not a portrait of the artist's wife. It dates from around the same time as Bogomazov's treatise Painting and Elements, completed in August 1914.
