Still Life with Sunflowers

signed in Latin l.r.

oil on canvas

Canvas: 77 by 61cm, 30¼ by 24in.

Framed: 95 by 78.5cm, 37½ by 31in.

The following condition report is provided by Hamish Dewar who is an external specialist and not an employee of Sotheby's:

Structural condition

The canvas is unlined and the turnover and tacking edges have been strengthened with a thin strip-lining to ensure that the canvas can be evenly and securely attached to the keyed wooden stretcher. The canvas is attached to a keyed wooden stretcher. The overall structural condition is very good and it is obviously most encouraging to find the canvas in its original unlined state. No further structural intervention is required.

Paint surface

The paint surface has an even varnish layer. Inspection under ultraviolet light shows just a few small, scattered retouchings, including a spot on the vase and small spots within the details of the still life.

Summary

The painting is therefore in very good and stable condition and no further work is required.
