Novgorod Bratchina, Stage Design for Sadko

signed in Latin l.l.

gouache and ink over pencil on board

Board: 51.5 by 99cm, 20¼ by 39in.

Framed: 79 by 125.5cm, 31 by 49¼in.

Executed circa 1929-1930

The board is slightly bowed. There are pinholes along the top edge. The corners show signs of wear and the top right corner is fraying. There are small tears to the top layer of the support to the bottom of the ornamented vault on the left as well as to the left of the top edge. There are minor scratches with associated losses in places along the edges. Further minor scratches and scuff marks can be seen in places. There are areas of fine craquelure, most notably to the sky, to the edges of the tablecloth and to the ink in places. These areas of craquelure show some minor associated flaking and losses, most notably to the stole of the saint in the centre, to the outlines of the moon in the top right and to one of the figures in the lower right. Framed and held behind plexiglass.
