Description

Property from the Estate of the Rt. Hon. The Countess of Sutherland

An English porcelain rectangular plaque depicting Dunrobin Castle

painted by H.L. Pratt, dated 1842

after an engraving; Dunrobin Castle, Sutherlandshire by John Charles Varrall (1794-1855) from a study by William Henry Bartlett (1809-1854), with figures before the castle in an extensive mountainous landscape, inscribed to the reverse; '402 / LW / Dunrobin Castle, Sutherlandshire. Painted from an engraving by the Duchess Countess of Sutherland by H. L. Pratt, 1842', framed

28 cm. x 40 cm.

A version of this image was originally published by George Virtue in Scotland Illustrated, London, 1837. This romantic image of the 'fairytale' Durobin Castle, the seat of the Sutherland family, is depicted before Charles Barry’s Victorian building works. Varralls engraving is taken from a study by William Henry Bartlett, which itself was based on a sketch by the then Countess of Sutherland.
