This work appears to have been painted in the immediate circle of Adriaen van Ostade (1610-85) in the second half of the 1630s, which was also the period in which Isaac van Ostade (1621-49), Adriaen's younger brother, was active in Adriaen's studio. Compare, for example, the painting by Adriaen van Ostade, sold London, Sotheby's, 3 July 1997, lot 4.1We are grateful to Dr. Fred G. Meijer for his help in the cataloguing of this lot.
