Domenicus van Tol was the nephew of the renowned genre painting Gerrit Dou (1613-75), also assumed to have been his teacher. Van Tol lived between his native Leiden, Utrecht, and Amsterdam. Van Tol mainly painted genre scenes in a style reminiscent of his uncle. In depicting a religious subject, the present work is more of a rarity within his œuvre.
