Acquired for the Wieg collection in the early 1980s.
Jacob van Spreeuwen, from Leiden, specialised in genre scenes and interiors. His work was influenced by other Leiden genre painters, such as Gerrit Dou (1613-75), Quiringh van Brekelenkam (1622/29-69/79), and Rembrandt van Rijn (1606-69). He frequently returned to the subject of the scholar in his study, which offered him the opportunity to depict in meticulous detail interiors full of fascinating and rare objects. In the present work, the composition is wider than in other examples, and the room in which the scholar sits is considerably more spacious.
