Born in Rotterdam, Michiel van Musscher came from a family of Mennonite artists. He was sent to Amsterdam for his pictorial training with Martinus Saeghmolen (an obscure history painter, ca. 1620-69) and the portrait painter Abraham van den Tempel (1622/23-72). He later worked under more renowned masters such as Gabriel Metsu (1629-69) and Adriaen van Ostade (1610-85). Van Musscher chose to specialise in the lucrative genre of portraits, attracting sitters from wealthy Amsterdam families and building a prolific and successful career.
