U. Middendorf, Hendrick Jacobsz. Dubbels, 1621-1707, Freren 1989, p. 169, cat. no. 125A, reproduced (as datable to circa 1655-60).

Renowned for his marine paintings, Dubbels was born in Amsterdam, where he lived his entire life. Many influences are visible in his style: at the beginning of his career, he worked in the studio of Simon de Vlieger (1601-53), but his paintings also bear similarities to the work of Jan Porcellis (1580/84-1632) and Jan van de Cappelle (1626-79). Later, he worked with Willem van de Velde the Younger (1610/11-93) until Van de Velde left Amsterdam for London in 1672. From this point on, little is known or recorded of Dubbels’ activity, though he is known to have lived until 1707.

The present work is comparable to another signed painting by Dubbels, now in the Nationalmuseum in Stockholm.1
