Born in Dordrecht, Arnold Boonen began his career as a genre painter. The first of the present pair of works is dated 1694, and the portraits were most probably painted during a trip to Germany, when Boonen spent at least four months at the court of Darmstadt. During this time, his depictions of German patricians received such great acclaim that he resolved only to focus on portrait paintings. In 1696 he returned to Holland and established himself in Amsterdam, where he became a sought-after portraitist to some of the most renowned personalities of his time.
