Mr Reyk (according to an inscription on the stretcher);

Acquired for the Wieg collection in the early 2000s.

The landscape and architecture in this work may have been painted by another artist, such as Matthijs Schoevaerdts (c.1660/5-in or after 1702), or Adriaen Frans Boudewijns (1644-1719), with whom Bout collaborated on many works. Bout and Boudewijns both lived in Paris from around 1675, until Bout married and moved back to Brussels twenty years later.
