Joost Cornelisz. Droochsloot was active in Utrecht for many years, from 1616 to 1661. He was a prolific painter who specialised in lively village fair scenes, of which the present work is a characteristic example. These depictions often share a similar structure, which is found in this work: the fair and sellers in the centre (in this case, a woman giving alms) and village buildings on both sides.
