George Nakashima

Prototype Desk

1972

American black walnut, East Indian rosewood

signed George Nakashima, dated June 1972 and with the original client's name

28⅞ x 91 x 69 in. (73 x 231 x 175.2 cm)

Acquired directly from the artist by the original owners, 1972
Cyril and Kate Gaydos, North Carolina
Phillips New York, December 12, 2001, lot 190
This stunning L-shaped desk is a variant of Nakashima's two classic desk models: the "Double-Pedestal" desk and the "Conoid" desk, cross-legged with a single pedestal. This prototype was designed with an option for a third pedestal with drawers, which would create two separate pieces, but the client preferred this original design.
