Property from a Private European Collection
1931 - 2013
signed in Cyrillic and dated 78 l.r.; further signed and dated on the reverse
oil on canvas
Canvas: 125 by 96cm, 49¼ by 37¾in.
Framed: 126 by 97.5cm, 49¾ by 38½in.
The following condition report is provided by Hamish Dewar who is an external specialist and not an employee of Sotheby's:
The canvas is unlined and is evenly and securely attached to a keyed wooden stretcher. The canvas is inscribed in the upper left as seen from the reverse. There are a few lines of slightly raised craquelure, such as in the black triangular area above the standing man. These lines of craquelure are stable.
The paint surface is also secure. The black areas are considerably more glossy than the white. There is a pattern of paint shrinkage within the black areas which would have been as a result of the natural drying processes of the artist's materials. These areas are again entirely stable. Inspection under ultraviolet light shows just a few very small spots of inpainting.
The painting would therefore appear to be in very good and stable condition and no work is required.
