Portrait

signed and titled in Cyrillic and dated 1968 on reverse

oil on canvas

Canvas: 31 by 35.5cm, 12¼ by 14in.

Framed: 33 by 37.5cm, 13 by 14¾in.

The following condition report is provided by Hamish Dewar who is an external specialist and not an employee of Sotheby's:

Structural Condition

The canvas is unlined and is securely attached to what is evidently the original fixed wooden stretcher. The canvas is extensively inscribed on the reverse. The corners of the stretcher are strengthened with wooden sections and the simple slip frame is attached to the outer edges of the stretcher.

Paint Surface

The painting has a layer of surface dirt as well as discoloured varnish and should respond very well to cleaning and revarnishing. There are some small losses in the upper left corner and around the outer edges and other very small historic losses. These could be filled and minimally retouched if required. There is an underlying pattern of historic drying craquelure which is entirely stable. Inspection under ultraviolet light shows some losses, particularly in the background, to fluoresce unevenly in my opinion, and upon close inspection, are probably not retouchings but are merely as a result of the uneven and discoloured varnish layers.

Summary

The painting is therefore in essentially good condition and has the potential for the overall appearance to be considerably improved by cleaning, restoration and revarnishing.
