The following condition report is provided by Henry Gentle who is an external specialist and not an employee of Sotheby's:

William Hodges

View of Port Louis

Oil on paper laid onto canvas, unframed

The painting is lined and there is good adhesion between the paper and lining fabric. There is good tension; a vertical join is visible to the right hand edge.

The paint layer is stable and secure and the original paint texture, visible in the energetic brushwork, is very well preserved along with the impasted highlights throughout to the clouds, sea and the ships.

Fine details are very well preserved.

Under u-v lighting, repair down the vertical fracture is visible along with mitigating of a fine horizontal scratch in the sky along with minor scattered loss.

The colours saturate well and chromatic integrity and tonal values are intact.

The painting is in a very good original preserved condition and presents well.
