The following condition report is provided by Henry Gentle who is an external specialist and not an employee of Sotheby's: John Wootton The Chase Oil on canvas, in a period gilt wood frame with minor wear. The canvas is lined and there is good adhesion between the original canvas and the lining fabric. There are no tears or deformations. There is a slight loss of tension across the picture plane and historic raised stretcher marks are visible. The paint layer is stable and secure and in very good original condition. The varnish is discoloured and its removal would result in an improvement in the overall tonality of the image and reveal original chromatic integrity. A scattering of recently applied restorations can be detected across the sky, on top of the existing discoloured varnish. These have been applied to mitigate stretcher marks, minor loss and discolouration, and many may not be necessary were the painting to be cleaned. Bravura brushwork texture, throughout, is intact and fine details are well preserved. Some of the more thinly applied layers of paint, particularly through the darker passages of foliage, have become more transparent with the passage of time. The painting presents well.
