The following condition report is provided by Henry Gentle who is an external specialist and not an employee of Sotheby's:

Rogier van der Weyden

Triptych

Oils on panel, in integral gilt wood frames in good condition,

The oak supports are well preserved. It was not possible to view the reverse of any of the panels but they appear stable and there is no deformation.

The paint layers are slightly raised under raking light conditions but stable and secure. Pronounced dark craquelure is visible.

The left hand wing has a repaired vertical fracture down through the right hand edge, to the right of St Veronica. The repair is visible under u-v light along with a scattering of recent restorations across the surface, concentrated particularly to the sky but also visible to a degree through St. Veronica's dress.

The right hand wing also has repairs visible under u-v light, to the sky following the vertical wood grain, to the white dress of the standing figure and to the hood of the figure in red.

The main panel has a vertical hairline fracture running down through the proper left elbow of Christ.

The repair of this vertical fracture is visible under u-v light along with a scattering of further restorations across the sky and, to a lesser extent, the figures.

The figure of Christ has 1-2 small losses to his right thigh; the skin tones, to most of the figures are well preserved and the facial features are in a good original state.

Many of the finer details to the landscape and clothing are in a good original condition and the chromatic intensity, throughout the triptych, is strong with the colours saturating well.

Patchy remains of a discoloured varnish remains, and its removal would improve the overall tonality.

The triptych presents well.
