The following condition report is provided by Henry Gentle who is an external specialist and not an employee of Sotheby's: Oil on canvas, in a modern painted frame. The painting is lined and there is good adhesion between the original canvas and the lining fabric. The lining is of some age, the tacking edge has degraded and there is a slight loss of tension. Gentle movement through the ground layer has resulted in some slightly raised ridges of paint, most noticeable to the top left corner. Under raking light overall gentle shrinkage of the paint layer is apparent. A naturally occurring phenomenon, and a result of the artist's technique. The paint layer is very well preserved and the natural sketchy quality is indicative of the speed of execution. Original under drawing is visible. Fine details are well preserved, particularly the more vulnerable aspects such as the rigging. Chromatic and tonal nuance would be improved with the removal of the discoloured varnish. Overall, the painting is in a very good preserved condition
