The Penitent Magdalene

oil on canvas

unframed: 111.6 x 93.7 cm.; 44 x 36⅞ in.

framed: 148.5 x 127 cm.; 58½ x 50 in.

Mrs Douglas Dick, 1930 (according to a label on the reverse);
Anonymous sale, London, Sotheby's, 11 December 1996, lot 260;
Where acquired by Sir Peter Jonas (1946–2020).

This is a second version of the composition by Curradi. The prime version was executed as part of a series of seven, all in lunette format, depicting scenes from the life of the Magdalene, now in the Depositi delle Gallerie Fiorentine, Florence.1 The present painting differs in format from the prime version and also in some details, such as the replacement of a sheet of paper with the crucifix. The lunette is signed and dated 1632, providing a terminus post quem for this painting.
