Where acquired by Sir Peter Jonas (1946–2020).

The present composition repeats the central group of a larger composition by Giovanni Lanfranco which was painted for Cardinal Alessandro Peretti Montalto, later entered the collection of Pierre Crozat, and is now in the Pushkin Museum, Moscow.1 Another version is in the collection of the Duke and Duchess of Devonshire at Chatsworth.2 Both these pictures are on canvas and include two groups of angels playing music in the upper corners of the composition.
