Frederick van Valckenborch came from an esteemed and long line of artists. His father Marten (1535–1612), his brother Gillis (1570–1622) and his uncle Lucas (1535–1597) all achieved commercial success throughout Europe. Frederick was also strongly influenced by Gillis van Coninxloo (1544–1607) as evidenced in the present painting.
We are grateful to Jan de Maere for suggesting an attribution to Frederick van Valckenborch and dating the painting to circa 1618–20, based on digital images.
