Description

Possibly Giuseppe Caputi (active 1813-1833)

Italian, Rome, circa 1820

After the Antique

The Dying Gaul

signed: CAPUTI D

bronze

23 by 44.5cm., 9 by 17½in.

The Roman marble Dying Gaul was discovered in the early 17th century during excavations for the Villa Ludovisi in Rome and was first recorded in the Ludovisi collection in 1623. This bronze reduction includes the inscription CAPUTI D, which may refer to the Italian sculptor and medalist Giuseppe Caputi, who was active in Rome during the first half of the 19th century.
