Description

Italian, circa 1600

Bust of a Woman, probably a personification of Abundance or Ceres

chalcedony, later mounted as a seal with a circa 18th-century chalcedony intaglio and with a diadem set with diamonds and rubies

50mm., 2in. overall

Compare the bust with the possibly 17th-century bas relief with a young woman in the Royal Collection (inv. no. RCIN 65771), published in K. Aschengreen Piacenti and J. Boardman, Ancient and Modern Gems and Jewels in the Collection of Her Majesty the Queen, London, 2008, p. 109, fig. 161. The form of the bust, with cornucopia to the back, is reminiscent of hardstone carvings circa 1600, including those by the famous Miseroni workshop.
