Description

Property from the Collection of Sir Peter Jonas

Hendrick Goltzius

1558 - 1617

Pietà (B. 41; Holl. 50; S. 331)

Engraving, 1596, a very fine, clear impression of Strauss' second (final) state, on paper with an Armorial watermark, framed

sheet: 187 by 128mm 7⅜ by 5in

Ex coll. Constant Moyaux (L. 1829a)

For his Pietà, Goltzius channeled Albrecht Dürer, emulating his masterful approach to engraving. This work is often compared to Dürer's 1520 engraving of The Virgin with the Swaddled Child (B. 38; M., Holl. 40), and is of course inspired by Michelangelo's Pietà, which Goltzius is believed to have seen and sketched.

The present impression hails from the collection of the late opera house director, champion of arts and discerning collector, Sir Peter Jonas.
