The Virgin and Child
oil on oak panel
unframed: 46.9 x 31.8 cm.; 18½ x 12½ in.
framed: 66.2 x 51 cm.; 26⅛ x 20⅛ in.
The panel is cradled, the paint surface is clean and the varnish is clear and even. Some discoloured retouchings are just visible in the Virgin's neck, face and hands and throughout the body of the Christ child. Further retouching is visible under ultraviolet light in the Virgin's sleeve and leg, and there are a few other scattered spots in the background around the edge of her hair, and in her blue cloak on the left. The aforementioned retouchings in the flesh tones of the figures are comprised of two campaigns - one which fluoresces darkly and the other that appears light.
