The Finding of Moses

inscribed with inventory number lower left: 59.

oil on canvas

unframed: 148 x 239.5 cm.; 58¼ x 94¼ in.

framed: 184.9 x 276.8 cm.; 72¾ x 109 in.

The canvas is lined and the paint surface is clean, with a clear and even varnish. There is a horizontal seam running the width of the canvas, a third of the way from the lower margin, and there is some discoloured retouching along this. The dark ground has become quite visible throughout. There are some visible, discoloured spots of retouching scattered throughout, and a more concentrated area of retouching is visible in the sky, upper centre. Inspection under ultraviolet light reveals the thick, opaque varnish, underneath which the aforementioned retouchings are confirmed. Further retouchings are revealed scattered in the flesh tones of the figures, notably in the face of the standing woman in the centre, the chest of the kneeling woman, lower centre, and the child's proper left leg. The painting presents very well in its current state, without a need for further intervention.
