The Creation of Eve

oil on panel

unframed: 101.4 x 146.6 cm.; 39⅞ x 57¾ in.

framed: 118.6 x 164.3 cm.; 46¾ x 64¾ in.

Said to have been given by Michelangelo (1475–1564) to Alessandro Farnese, Duke of Parma and Piacenza  (1545–1592) (according to the Christie's catalogue below);
Anonymous sale, London, Christie's, 4 March 1927, lot 101 (as Italian School), for £42 to Leger;
José T., Brussels.

The unusual iconography of this scene would appear to derive from the right-hand side of The Creation of Adam and Eve - formerly attributed to Jacopo del Sellaio (1441–93) and now given to another Florentine artist, the Master of Apollo and Daphne (circa 1480–1510) - in Yale University Art Gallery, Connecticut.1
