The panel is uncradled and slightly bowed. The paint surface is relatively clean and the varnish relatively clean and even. The central image appears to have been inserted into the panel, with a border of approx. 1 inch surrounding it - this is most evident in raking light. A small, vertical surface crack has developed just right of centre on the lower margin, running down from the original painting. Inspection under ultraviolet light is impeded by the rather opaque varnish, but small retouchings appear in the background and the figure with his back to the viewer on the right, as well as sparsely scattered around where the panel has been inserted, and in a couple of spots at the outer margins.
