Sketch of a kneeling man, the Prodigal Son

oil on paper laid on oak panel, unframed

58.5 x 41.3 cm.; 23 x 16¼ in.

The paper is laid down on a panel that is uncradled and slightly bowed and formed of two vertical planks. The folds or joins in the paper are visible to the naked eye as are a number of small areas where the paper is coming away from the panel (most visible in raking light). The paint surface is slightly dirty and the varnish is rather matte. There are a couple of small damages visible to the naked eye in the man's blue drapery and in his right elbow. Inspection under ultraviolet light reveals fine lines of retouching along the paper folds as well as small, fine lines of retouching scattered in and around the figure which correspond largely with the areas of the paper that are coming away from the panel. There are some more concentrated small areas of retouching in the centre of the upper margin, in the upper right corner, in the lower left corner, in lower right corner and in the centre of the lower margin, as well as in the background around the silhouette of the blue drapery and in the shadowed part of his left leg. In overall fairly good condition.
