Saint Jerome in his study, with the lion

oil on oak panel, the reverse branded with the mark of the City of Antwerp Panel Makers' Guild

unframed: 93.1 x 122.8 cm.; 36⅝ x 48⅜ in.

framed: 111.9 x 140.1 cm.; 44 x 55⅛ in.

The panel is formed of four horizontal planks and supported with butterfly battens. Each individual plank is slightly bowed and small losses all the join are apparent. Lines of discoloured retouching are visible along these lines also. The paint surface is dirty with a discoloured varnish. There is also a small loss with a significant amount of retouching in the side of the lion's mouth. Inspection under ultraviolet light reveals the old and very uneven varnish. The aforementioned retouchings are confirmed but apart from some small retouchings around the papers (upper right) there does not appear to be a great deal of other intervention.

This composition exists in another panel, of smaller dimensions, which belongs to the Openbaar Centrum voor Maatschappelijk Welzijn (OCMW), Herentals, Belgium (inv. no. B 3.05).1 That panel likewise has the brand of the castle, the mark of the City of Antwerp Panel Makers' Guild, on the reverse, as well as the mark of an as yet unidentified panel maker, in the form of a six-pointed asterisk.
