oil on canvas

unframed: 92 x 72.2 cm.; 36¼ x 28½ in.

framed: 108 x 99.5 cm.; 42½ x 39¼ in.

John Robinson, Esq.;
By whom bequeathed to George Henry Glasse;
By whom presented to The Marine Society, 26 January 1804.
Marine Society catalogue of paintings and works of art, 1905, cat. no. 1 (as artist unknown).
The sitter was appointed First Chaplain to the Marine Society from 1781, a position he held until 1812. On the portrait it is stated that he was Chaplain from 1756, but he was not appointed a Member of the Committee until 1769, and a letter from him on 15 March 1769 accepting his appointment to the Committee clearly shows that this was his first acquaintance with the Society.
