Ortensia de Mancini, Duchesse de Mazarin (1646–1699), was the fourth of the five famous Mancini sisters, noted for their great beauty, who moved from Rome to Paris after their father’s death in the hope of making advantageous marriages. Having initially refused a proposal from Charles II (1630–1685) in 1659 while he was still in exile, Ortensia became the King’s mistress when she came to London in 1675, following her flight from an unhappy marriage to Armand Charles de La Porte de La Meilleraye, Duc Mazarin (1632–1713). A flirtation with the Prince of Monaco saw her fall from royal favour, but she was well-provided for by James II (1633–1701) and continued to live in London on the pension first granted to her by Charles, until she died.
We are grateful to Francesco Petrucci for endorsing the attribution to Voet on the basis of photographs.
