London 1609 - 1672

Portrait of a gentleman, traditionally identified as Lodowicke Muggleton

Watercolour on vellum, silver-gilt scroll-mounted frame

77 by 64 mm.

John Pierpont Morgan (1837-1913), New York;
his executor’s sale, London, Christie’s, 24 June 1935, lot 45 (as a Portrait of Lodowicke Muggleton, bt. Fabius;
The Hickson Collection;
his sale, London, Sotheby's, 29 March 1965, lot 40;
where acquired by the father of the present owner

An identical miniature was sold as part of the Heckett Collection (London, Sotheby's, 11 July 1977, lot 145). The sitter in that work was identified as Sir Henry Vane, however, physically the gentleman depicted does not compare favorably with Cooper's portrait of Vane in the Portland Collection (see The Walpole Society, vol IV, no. 64, pl. VIII).

When the present miniature was sold in 1965, the identity of the sitter was given, firmly as Lodowicke Muggleton (1609-1698), however this has more recently been questioned.
