Portrait of a gentleman, three-quarter length, holding a medallion

dated and inscribed centre left: A°1664 / ÆT. 26.

oil on copper

unframed: 21.8 x 16.7 cm.; 8⅝ x 6⅝ in.

framed: 42 x 37 cm.; 16½ x 14⅝ in.

The copper plate is flat and stable, and the paint surface is relatively dirty with a discoloured varnish. The lower left corner (below the figure's hand) appears entirely retouched. This is confirmed under ultraviolet light which also reveals fine lines of strengthening sparsely scattered in the figure's hair. There are also fine lines of strengthening scattered throughout his clothes. The left, upper and top of the right margin fluoresce lightly. The painting appears in overall good condition.
