‘Les Amours Pecheurs’ (The Love of Fishing)

oil on canvas

unframed: 98 x 129.5 cm.; 38⅝ x 51 in.

framed: 112.6 x 145.4 cm.; 44⅜ x 57¼ in.

With Eric Turquin, Paris, 1 October 1997;
From whom acquired by the present owner.

The presumed pendant to this painting is the L'Amour Oiseleur (The Love of Birdwatching), recorded as in the collection of Joseph Himmelsbach, Bad Schonborn, West Germany, in 1984.1 Bordeaux dates that work to the mid-1720s, by comparison with other paintings that depict putti sporting in Allegories of Music, Painting and Drawing, for example. Lemoyne was the teacher of François Boucher, who would go on to produce paintings of putti directly inspired by his master, perpetuating the popularity of the genre for the next generation.
