oil on canvas

unframed: 56.5 x 44.7 cm.; 22¼ x 17⅝ in.

framed: 73.6 x 63.2 cm.; 29 x 24⅞ in.

The canvas is lined and the paint surface is relatively clean with a slightly yellowed varnish. A slight stretcher mark is visible along all four margins and there appear to be two vertical additions to the canvas on either side each approx. 1cm. wide. There is a slight degree of wear visible, particularly in the shadowy areas of the woman's headdress. Inspection under ultraviolet light reveals concentrated retouchings around all four margins and also in horizontal bands through the lower part of the canvas in her blue and white drapery possibly due to that part of the canvas having been rolled up in the past. There are much smaller, pin-prick retouchings in faint, horizontal formations scattered through the upper part of the white drapery and through the lower half of the woman's face. There are a couple of slightly larger areas of retouching in her forehead each approx. 0.5cm. The painting is in overall fairly good condition.
