Diana and Callisto

oil on canvas

unframed: 181.5 x 255.5 cm.; 71½ x 100⅝ in.

framed: 183.9 x 257.9 cm.; 72⅜ x 101⅝ in

The canvas is lined, the paint surface is relatively clean and the varnish is clear and slightly uneven. Small areas of discoloured retouching (the largest of which measures 8 x 6 cm.) are visible to the naked eye, mainly scattered along the upper and lower margins - these are supported on the reverse with small canvas patches. There is a horizontal line of discoloured retouching running the width of the canvas in the centre to a seam. Other small, discoloured retouchings are scattered through the figures' flesh tones. The most notably area of restoration runs down the extent of Diana's right leg and a similarly concentrated large area is in the shoulder of the attendant directly behind her. In overall fairly good condition.
