signed and dated lower left: J.I. Richards 1803

oil on canvas

unframed: 96.4 x 127.7 cm.; 38 x 50¼ in.

framed: 118 x 149.5 cm.; 46½ x 58⅞ in.

The canvas has a firm relining, and the paint surface is clean with a clear varnish. The impasto paintwork in the clouds remain intact. The network of craquelure in the foreground and trees on the right has become more distinct in areas where retouching has been applied to reduce this appearance. Retouching to a T-shaped repaired damage is also visible by the base of the tree trunks lower right, approx. 5x5 cm. Inspection under ultraviolet light confirms all this and further reveals additional retouching to the network of craquelure in the boulders and bank, lower left. None of these impede legibility of the image, which is in overall fairly good condition.
