Description

Circle of Willem van de Velde the Younger

An English man-o'-war saluting an English royal yacht, in choppy seas

oil on canvas

unframed: 88.3 x 99.9 cm.; 34¾ x 39¼ in.

framed: 115.5 x 125.8 cm.; 45½ x 49½ in.

Anonymous sale, London, Christie's, 25 July 1907, lot 98 (as Van de Velde), for £15, 15s.

The yacht on the right carries the royal standard of the Stuart kings at the top of the mast. The work probably depicts a royal visit to the English war fleet during the reign of either Charles II (1630–1685), or that of his successor James II (1633–1701).

Another version of this composition was sold in Zurich, Koller West, 17 September 2014, lot 6550 (as follower of Willem Van de Velde the Younger).

We are grateful to Dr Remmelt Daalder, former curator of the Scheepvaartmuseum, Amsterdam, for dating the painting to circa 1685, based upon the identification of the various flags and ensigns.
