Description
The Property of the Downside Abbey General Trust
Florentine School, late 14th Century
A triptych: The Virgin and Child with Saints Dominic and Francis (central panel); The Flagellation and the Resurrection (left wing); The Crucifixion (right wing)
tempera on panel, with later gilding, the central panel in an engaged frame, all set within a modern frame with pointed top
central panel: overall dimensions: 80.3 x 41.4 cm.; 31½ x 16¼ in.; painted surface: 43.1 x 30.8 cm.; 17 x 12⅛ in.;
each wing: overall dimensions: 46.1 x 17.8 cm.; 18⅛ x 7 in.; painted surface: 44 x 15 cm.; 17¼ x 5⅞ in.
The style and design of this triptych reflect Giotto's lasting influence on Florentine painting, which was felt long after the artist's death and well into the 15th century. The iconography and characteristics of many of the figures here have much in common with the work of Agnolo Gaddi (1350–1396), whose father, the painter Taddeo Gaddi (1290–1366), was a pupil of Giotto himself.
Significant areas of repainting, not to mention the regilded background, make a firm attribution for this triptych difficult to establish. Close comparison may be drawn, however, with the design found in Gaddi's panels depicting the Flagellation and Resurrection in San Miniato al Monte, Florence;1 and in several depictions of the Crucifixion, such as that in the Musée du Petit Palais, Avignon (inv. no. 20166).2
