Pen and brown ink and watercolor with touches of gouache over traces of black chalk, within brown wash framing lines, on vellum;

signed and dated, in pen and brown ink, lower left: huet fils. an. 1809 and inscribed, lower right: 1/4, also inscribed on the back of board, in pen and brown ink: Panthère Mâle / par huet, peintre du muséum l'histoire naturelle de Paris.

Nicolas Huet, son of Jean-Baptiste Huet, was official painter to the Musée d'Histoire Naturelle et de la Ménagerie of the Empress Josephine, and specialised in painting animals and plants.  A particularly fine example of his work, depicting a tiger, was sold, Sotheby's New York, Wednesday, 24 January 2007, lot 00079
